About the product

Erlang calculator is a software and analytical product, created in Information-analytical department of OJSC «Intellect Telecom» to assess the needs for transmission resource for carrying mono-service real-time traffic. Calculation algorithms are based on the Erlang formula. During the problem solution the following four characteristics are used as input parameters or estimated as performance measures of the tested network segment:

• line speed, expressed in terms of transmission units required for service of a single request; 
• the average number of requests received for the average time of service (the intensity of the requests expressed in Erlangs);
  
• the proportion of requests rejected (the probability of blocking);
  
• the mean number of serviced requests (the mean number of line transmission resource units occupied for requests servicing).

Characteristics of the solution

1. A user gets an opportunity to find two missing performance measures if he knows values of any two out of four performance measures that estimate the quality the tested network segment functioning. This feature of the product expands greatly the number of problems set that can be solved at the planning of the network infrastructure.

2. During the computing specially optimized calculation schemes are used to allow assessing characteristics in a larger range of change of input parameters.

3. Calculation algorithms are also optimized in accordance with the time of the calculations. This allows using the product in the processing of large volumes of data.

Development of the product

Currently, the department specialists are carrying out the research to develop similar products intended to assess the needs for transmission resource of multi service links with regard to the formation of input flow of requests:

• multi-service nature of the emerging traffic 
• traffic dependence on the conditions, in particular, on the network load
  
• the possibility of repetition of blocking requests

and implementation of operator management functions:

• limited access 
• reservation
  
• dynamic allocation of the resource
  
• traffic prioritization
